LOTUS EVIJA - EVII YAA

Lotus Evija

Overview

The all-electric Lotus Evija hypercar is both visually exciting and mechanically extraordinary, with ultrafast charging capability and almost 2000 horsepower. If the company can meet its intended total output of 1972 horsepower, the Evija (pronounced E-vee-ya) will be the most powerful production road car on the planet. Lotus plans to build only 130 examples of this exotic EV—none of which will be offered in the U.S.—at a cost of more than $2.1 million each.

Powertrain, Charging, and Handling

The Evija has a mostly carbon-fiber structure and is powered purely by electricity. All four wheels are driven by a combined motor that makes up to 1972 horsepower and a claimed 1254 lb-ft of torque through a single-speed transmission. Its mid-mounted battery pack is displayed underneath a clear cover. Lotus claims that 80 percent of the Evija's battery can be charged in just 12 minutes thanks to ultrafast charging rates. Along with a pushrod-operated rear suspension, the electrified hypercar features extensive aerodynamic addenda that includes a diffuser with a drag-reduction system (called DRS) and an adjustable rear wing.

Interior and Technology

The Lotus Evija has drawn comparisons with the Ford GT and the Aston Martin Valkyrie, with much of its appearance mimicking the technical look of LMP race cars. The fanciful Lotus has a camera-based rearview-mirror system that includes pods that motor out of the scissor-opening doors. Despite the similarities with track-ready hypercars such as the McLaren Senna, the Evija boasts a livable cabin space. With adjustable seats, sufficient shoulder room, and real (non-touch-sensitive) switchgear, its interior is surprisingly practical. Of course, the Lotus Evija also will be filled with carbon-fiber surfaces and other luxuries.
